Karate Master Roy Day has always been interested in mystical, ritual, and spiritual behavior as well as the martial arts. He began writing poetry in his early teens, some of which reflects his own spiritual questioning, searching, and discovery. As a young man he met Ruth Stillman, a highly respected Esoteric Section-trained Theosophist, and one of the highest degree Co-Freemasons in the world. Day remained her student and friend for the rest of her life. Through Ruth, he met Evelyn Eaton, author of 24 books, three about her healing and transformation into a Me'tis (mixed-blood) shaman.
Grandmother Eve invited Day to come out to Independence, California. From there he was introduced to, and became a member of Grandfather Raymond Stones' Sweat Lodge as well as the one at the Tule River Reservation. At 25 years of age, Day was studying under three seventy-five-year-old women (including Buddhist healer Dr. Gayle Pierce of San Jose) and a Northern Paiute Medicine Man.

The years spent with Ruth, Eve, Dr. Gayle, and Grandfather Raymond laid the spiritual foundation of Day’s life. The stories, miracles, wisdom, and knowledge of these lesser known spiritual giants must be preserved and everyone is encouraged to read Evelyn Eaton's books I Send a Voice, The Snowy Earth Comes Gliding, and The Shaman and The Medicine Wheel as well as Roy’s thesis.
Day’s the Shaman Between Worlds was ostensibly an academic paper about the effects of Christianity on Northern Paiute ritual practice but it is really the story of Grandmother Eve, Grandfather Raymond, and Roy’s spiritual journey as he trained to be a shaman/healer.
